David Ames grew up on a corn and livestock farm in Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University and then attended Michigan State University and completed a PhD in Animal Husbandry and Physiology. David first joined the faculty at Kansas State University and in 1982 he was named Department Head of Animal Sciences at CSU. During his professional career, David continued his lifelong interest in sports as a high school basketball and football official. His interest in officiating grew and his officiating career developed to include college level football and basketball. In 1978 he was accepted as a football official for the Big 8 Conference where he worked until the formation of the Big 12 Conference in 1996. David continued to work for the Big 12 Conference until he retired as an on field football official in 2004. In all, David officiated 26 seasons of Division I football that totaled 252 games including 12 bowl games. During his entire college career, he was a back judge. With the beginning of instant replay in NCAA football in 2005 David was asked to be a member of the replay staff for the Big 12 Conference. The past eight years have been challenging as replay rules have been expanded and refined. Hours of rule and video study have been rewarding for David who was assigned both the FCS and BCS national championship games in 2012. David has been a replay official for 135 games including 9 bowl games. David is very proud of his two children Jennifer and Rob and their families. David and his wife Shirley reside in Fort Collins.
